Day One of the 83rd Session

First Reading - in the Austin American-Statesman - will have daily summaries of what's happening in Austin everyday. I probably post links to these highlighting what I think is pertinent to the class.

Here's what stuck out to me today. We have remarkable continuity at the top of the executive and legislative branches. This will probably cancel out the impact of having a relative new ranks and file:

The Big Three

It may not be Yalta, or even Potsdam, but the Big Three, after breaking bread over breakfast this morning, will be holding a joint press conference at 9:30 at the Governor’s Press Conference Room.

The Big Three, of course, are Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus, who have breakfast together every Wednesday the Legislature is in session. This morning they follow their breakfast routine by talking about the 83rd Legislative Session with reporters.

There are few if any states with this kind of continuity at the top. Perry, the longest-serving governor in the land, has been on the job since he succeeded George W. Bush, on his becoming president. Dewhurst has been lieutenant governor since 2003, and Straus is now embarking on his third term as speaker. Perry said the three talk all the time, and their staffs communicate with each other multiple times daily.

Brownie point opportunity if you get the reference to Yalta and Potsdam
