The Texas Women’s Health Program is launched

As a result of the conflict between the Texas Government (or at least the social conservatives within it) and Planned Parenthood, Texas has had to create its own mechanism for providing health care to poor women. Texas now prevents women who qualify for these services to get them from organizations that provide abortions. But doing so led the federal government to pull its funding for the programs - which was the bulk of it.

So Texas - if it is going to provide health care to poor women at all - has to do it alone.

To do so its launched the Texas Women’s Health Program this week. The question now is: can, or will, Texas provide this service at a level comparable to what it was able to provide in cooperation with the federal government. Texas tends to not like to provide services to the poor - at least through the state government. This will be worth monitoring.
