Weak voter turnout negates Democrats ID advanatage over Republicans

If you looked through the graphics below and noticed the sizable lead Democrats had over Republicans regarding Party ID, you might have wondered why Democrats don't win every election. The answer - as we will cover in class - is that the groups that vote Democrat tend to vote at lower rates than those who vote Republican.

We will be be looking more at the groups that tends to comprise each party soon enough, but overall Republicans include groups that are wealthier and more highly educated than Democrats, and those groups are far more likely to vote, especially in midterm and primary elections. This makes them powerful beyond their numbers.
