From the Fiscal Times: Looks Like Congress Can’t Stand the Idea of an Independent Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve is designed to be insulated from the political branches so that it makes its decisions according to economic, not political, factors. Nevertheless members of Congress - as should be expected from any group of ambitious people - want to control it.

Here's a look at what is driving this desire. The new chair of the Ways and Means Committee - area rep Kevin Brady - is at the center of these efforts.
